I call them "cartoon portraits" instead of caricatures because when I create these images, I'm trying to capture the individual's personality and make 'em look good as opposed to indulging in the sometimes extreme exaggeration of features the term caricature implies (though I can sure do that if preferred).

I work from photos to capture the likeness, incorporating characteristic elements as suggested (activities, habits, etc.). This art is often used for special event materials (retirement parties, going-away parties, birthdays) and for business promotional use. The final images are set up for print production (invitations, name-tags, signs, etc.) or electronic use as needed.
